WOD
"Lynne"

Five rounds for max reps of:
Body weight bench press
Pull-ups

I know that the CrossFit mentality often shuns the bench press movement and considers it a "bro" lift, but it does have alot of value to add to your overall fitness. This is a beauty of "constantly varied" mantra of CrossFit.

What is CrossFit

I'm sure many of you have heard of CrossFit can get a general feel for what it is, however, I would like to take some time to define CrossFit.

The official CrossFit website (
www.crossfit.com) answers the question "What is CrossFit?"

"CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen."

One key point I think should be highlighted in their explanation of CrossFit is that "our specialty is not specializing." This can also be reffered to the concept of General Physical Preparedness or GPP. Inherit in our job as Soldiers of the U.S. Army; it is essential that we are not only physically, but also mentally fit for the unknown.

The second point I'd like to highlight is that "the CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability." This concept of scalability allows the individuals of all fitness levels utilize the CrossFit methodology to cater to their capabilities. What this means to the Army is that it allows everyone in your unit, from the PT studs to the Soldiers that need a little extra motivation, a way to push themselves to their limits.

There is a lot of great information and knowledge that can be gained from the CrossFit methodology and I plan to continue to post tidbits of information from time to time to help make sense of CrossFit.
